Taking Advantage of Akward Spaces

We all have that weird nook under the stairs, a closet that was an after thought or space between two doors that doesn't really have a purpose. There are several options that can help you utilize this space because in small apartments, space is at a minimum. Although you could build a bathroom in it, like my college sweethearts landlord did, but seeing as you could not wash your hands unless you were sitting on the toilet, it is ill advised.

Instead, here are some useful ideas for making your small space practical.

The size of the awkward space will limit or expand your ability to repurpose it. If it is an incredibly small nook build some shelves and use it to either display or store trinkets. If it is a flat wall, buy a narrow bookshelf. You would be surprised how narrow a prefabricated bookshelf can be. Just check out the one below.

A couple years ago, we had an apartment with a nook that was about a metre wide. We installed a closet rail and hung up a nice curtain to use this space as a closet. I thought I was being clever but I love the next idea more.

If you have a bit more space to work with, such as a space under the stairs, create a work space. I like that they made the wall space functional in the workspace below. You could use chalkboard paint or sheets of dry erase board to help optimize the small space as well.

You could also make it into a custom built in.

Or use a closet for a hide away office.

Do you have an awkward space? What did you do with it? What do you want to do with it?
